The paper analyzes the status of forest management in Russia, which is in poor condition. In fact, in Russia the system of state forest management at all levels has been destroyed, so that there is depletion of viable forest resources, and, as a consequence, the continuing fall in the efficiency of timber companies and sawmills, wood processing industry and the bankruptcy of some of them. Based on the analysis, measures have been suggested to improve forest management and reinstatement of the Federal Forest Service of Russia, abolished in May 2000. At the same time the necessity of granting this authority priorities such powers as: the definition and timely clarification of the national forest policy, the right of legislative initiative to improve forest legislation, organization of developing a system of strategic forest plans at all levels, organization of continuous, sustainable and multi-purpose forest management and forest revenue maximizing, reinstatement of the state specialized organization of forest planning, directly subordinated to the Federal Forest Service of Russia. The implementation of the proposed measures will restore order in national forests and will maintain highly profitable forestry.
