Shvidenko Anatoly Zinovievich, born 20 September, 1937 in the village of Novaya Greblya, Zhashkivskyi Raion, Cherkasy Oblast, Ukraine (former Soviet Union). Graduated from the the Ukrainian Agricultural Academy (at the present time – National University of Life Sciences and Environment of Ukraine), Faculty of Forestry (now – Education and Research Institute of Forestry and Park Gardening), with a specialty in Forestry, qualification Engineer of Forestry (1959), and from Kiev State University (at the present time – Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv), Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, with a specialty in Applied Mathematics, qualification Mathematician (1972), in the city of Kiev, Ukraine. Candidate (PhD, 1968), and Doctor (DSc, 1982) of Agricultural Sciences, Professor (1983) in Forest Planning and Forest Inventory. DSc thesis: «Teoreticheskie i Eksperimental'nye Obosnovaniya Sistemy Inventarizatsii Gornykh Lesov Zony Intensivnogo Vedeniya Khozyaystva» (Theoretical and Experimental Substantiations for the System of Inventory Mountain Forests in Zone of Intensive Forest Management), Kyiv, Ukr. Agr. Acad. (at the present time – Nat. Univ. Life Sci. Environ. of Ukraine), 1981 (in Russian). During 1959-1966 worked in the Russian Far East as a forest inventory specialist, junior scientist at the Sakhalin Forest Experimental Station and the chief forester at Dolinsk Forestry Enterprise. In the period of 1967-1988 worked at the Ukrainian Agricultural Academy, where he grown from PhD student to the Head for Department of Forest Inventory and Leader of the Special Laboratory on Productivity of Forests. In 1988-1992 worked as a Director of the All-Union Scientific and Information Center of Forest Resources of the USSR, in the city of Moscow, Soviet Union. Currently Senior Research Scholar for the Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM) Program, Head for the Research Project "Assessment of Northern Eurasian Forests (ZAPAS) at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), in the city of Laxenburg, Austria (since 1992 to present time). Principal Investigator for at V. N. Sukachev Institute of Forest, Rus. Acad. Sci., Sib. Br., Fed. Res. Center, Krasnoyarsk Sci. Center, Rus. Acad. Sci., Sib. Br., in the city of Krasnoyarsk, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia (since 2002 to present time). Academician of the International Academy of Informatization (1994), Academician of the Ukrainian Forest Academy (2007). The Honorable Professor for the National University of Life Sciences and Environment of Ukraine (2007). Leader, Co-leader and PI for numerous national Russian and international scientific projects on impacts of forests on major biogeochemical cycles, forest inventory and planning, ecological monitoring, modeling of growth and productivity of forests, remote sensing applications in forestry and forest management, sustainable forest management under global change. Leading author of the II, III и IV Reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Coordinating Lead Author of the UN Project «Third Millennium Ecosystem Assessment», Chapter «Forests and Woodlands» (2002-2005). Participated in many international councils and institutions (FAO UN FRA-2000; International Geosphere-Biosphere Program; Scientific Council of the World Commission on Forestry and Sustainable Development). Co-founder (1981), Vice-President (2002-2008) and Member of the Steering Committee of the International Boreal Forest Research Association – IBFRA (2008). Participant and Organizer of sessions at many World Forestry Congresses and Congresses of IUFRO. Laureate of the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR for achievements in science and technology (Gosudarstvennaya Premiya Ukrainy v Oblasti Nauki i Tekhniki) (1990), awarded the Soviet Union State Order «Orden Znak Pocheta» (Sign of Honor) (1990), UN International Prize for the Environment (2006), recognized among scientists who shared in the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, awarded to the IPCC, Gold Medal of the International Academy of Informatization (2011). Associate editor for an international and national Russian peer-reviewed scientific journals: «Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change»; «Euras. J. For. Res.»; «Lesnaya Taksatsiya i Lesoustroystvo» (Forest Inventory and Forest Planning); «Sibirski Lesnoi Zurnal» (Sib. J. For. Sci.). Author and co-author of more than 400 papers and 15 books.
