Osawa Akira, born 19 April, 1954 in the city of Saitama, Saitama Prefecture, Japan, deceased 22 May, 2019 in Japan. Graduated from Nagoya University, Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences, School of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Bioenvironmental Sciences, Laboratory of Forest Environment and Resources, with BSc in Forestry, in the city of Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Chūbu region, Japan (1978). Cornell University, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering, with MSc in Environmental Engineering, in the city of Ithaca, the state of New York, United States (1981). PhD studies in Silviculture and Forest Ecology at Yale University, School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, with PhD in Forestry, in the city of New Haven, state of Connecticut, United States (1986). Postdoc studies at the University of Washington, College of Forest Resources (at the presnt time College of the Environment), School of Environmental and Forest Sciences, in the city of Seattle, state of Washington, United States (April, 1986 November, 1987). Research Scientist for the Hokkaido Research Centre, Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute, in the city of Sapporo, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan (1988-2005). Professor in Ecosystem Production and Dynamics, Hall of Global Environmental Research / Department of Natural Resources, Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, Kyoto University (2006-present), in the city of Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. Expert in forest stand development, forest production and carbon dynamics. PI and CoPI for numerous national and international research projects on boreal forest dynamics, particularly in northwestern Canada, Central Siberia, Scandinavia, and Japan. Associate Editor for Sibirskij Lesnoj Zurnal (Siberian Journal of Forest Science) (2014-2019). Reviewer for scientific journals: The American Naturalist; Annals of Botany; Canadian Journal of Forest Research; Ecology; Ecoscience; Eurasian Journal of Forest Research; Forest Ecology and Management; Journal of Ecology; Journal of Forest Research; Journal of Sustainable Forestry; Journal of Tropical Ecology; Tree Physiology. Author and co-author of more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and 16 books.
